1. Professional Background
Melvin Upchurch is a U.S. Air Force veteran who used his GI Bill to graduate from Millsaps College with honors. After working as a CPA with KPMG, he worked his way up the corporate ladder to become the CFO of a local bank and the President of a regional mortgage company. Melvin transitioned into real estate and ultimately founded Red Hills Realty in 2007, building a brokerage centered around relationships, integrity, and community.
Over his career, Melvin has closed more than 1,000 homes, earning over 300 five-star Zillow reviews and 140+ five-star Google reviews. His business has been built almost entirely on referrals — the same foundation he now teaches agents to build on.
2. Leadership Philosophy
Melvin’s approach is simple:
Great agents don’t need to be managed — they need to be supported.
He believes in:
- Real-world contract and negotiation guidance
- Risk-management that protects agents and clients
- Practical coaching rooted in experience
- Clear communication and ethical professionalism
- Helping agents grow a long-term, sustainable, referral-driven business
Agents at Red Hills know their broker is accessible, responsive, and invested in their success
3. Why Red Hills Exists
Melvin built Red Hills to create a different kind of brokerage — one where:
- Agents are respected as independent professionals
- Relationships matter more than lead funnels
- The brokerage exists to support agents, not the other way around
- Growth comes through referrals, not churn
- Culture stays collaborative and grounded in service
This is a company designed for agents who want a career, not a hustle.
4. Personal Note
Melvin is deeply rooted in Birmingham, where he and his wife Jill raise their son Bram, an avid competitive golfer. Family, Church, community, and service guide everything he does — and those values shape the culture of Red Hills Realty.
Red Hills Realty is growing—but intentionally.
Melvin is open to conversations with established agents who care about relationships and believe the right fit matters.
No pressure—just a conversation to see if there’s a mutual fit.
